Present Status and Future Developmental Perspectives of Pole and Line Fishery in Sri Lanka

Pole and line fishery is one of the oldest traditional techniques employed in tuna fishing Indian Ocean including Sri Lanka, which mainly targeted to exploit skipjack tuna. This has fallen a relatively low level significance during past three decades. The potentialities for expansion pole Lanka are regained with possible negative consequences allied drift gill net region. present study attempts understand factors that hinder practice gear progressively decades while providing necessary recommendations future fishery. Scarcity Dipterygonotus balteatus (Redbait), main live bait species used reasons documented literature. findings based on Dr Fridtjof Nansen survey 2018 revealed resource abundant waters but requires an efficient harvesting technique. impediment factor hindered popularization deficiency free schools where more than 99% surface were found be concentrated beyond range existing practices. commercialization will feasible primarily modernization includes vessel upgrades, introduction Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs), forecasting schools, methods harvest secondarily through proper awareness skill development.
